Description

A black cylinder shade, 40cm across, sits close to the ceiling on a short satin nickel centre pole, with a frosted diffuser closing the underside so the light spreads softly rather than glaring straight down. Inside the shade, a white laminate lining lifts the brightness and keeps the colour clean, so the fabric reads dark from below without dulling the output. The shape is plain and quiet: a straight-sided drum, a little brightwork at the ceiling, nothing fussy about it.

The light it gives is ambient, a general wash rather than a directed beam, which suits hallways, landings, bedrooms and the quieter end of a kitchen or dining room. We reach for a semi flush like this where ceilings are lower and a pendant would hang into the path of a door or a tall visitor. It takes one E27 lamp, 20W max, and a GLS A60 LED is what we would put in it. Paired with a compatible dimmer and a dimmable lamp, it will drop back to a low evening level.

The shade is Terylene with cotton over a metal frame and a PVC lining, and the metalwork behind it is iron finished in satin nickel. Cleaning wants nothing more than a dry cloth over the fabric and the metal, with the light switched off and not illuminated while you work; detergents and coarse cloths will mark both surfaces, so keep them well away. It carries a one year warranty.
