Description

A 40cm faux silk shade sits close to the ceiling on satin nickel metalwork, giving the softness of a fabric shade without a pendant's drop. The outer face is antique gold and the lining is ruby, so the light warms as it passes through and the inside of the shade glows a deep red once switched on. It takes an E27 lamp, and we would fit a GLS globe in LED here, up to 20W, for a full and unfussy spread. Dimming is possible where both the lamp and the dimmer suit it.

Semi flush fittings earn their place in rooms where a pendant would hang too low: hallways and landings, bedrooms with sloping or shallow ceilings, a dressing room, a small study. The shade is generous enough to read as a proper light rather than a functional one, so it holds its own over a hall table or at the foot of the stairs. The gold and ruby pairing suits warmer schemes, with red brick, walnut, deep greens or a papered wall, and it flatters brass and copper accessories elsewhere in the room.

The metalwork is finished in satin nickel, a low sheen that stays quiet against a white ceiling, and the fabric is a dual faux silk, wide and shallow in proportion. Keep the shade clean with a soft brush or the upholstery tool of a vacuum, used lightly; the nickel wants nothing more than a dry cloth, and no sprays near the fabric. It carries a one year warranty.
