Description

A polished chrome ceiling plate keeps the shade close to the ceiling, with a drum of black faux silk hung beneath it. The shade measures 30cm across, which gives a broad, even circle of light rather than a narrow beam, and the white laminate lining pushes that light back down instead of soaking it up. Chrome picks up whatever daylight a room has, so the fitting reads as bright metal against dark fabric. It is a semi flush fitting, so the shade sits just below the ceiling line and the room keeps its head height.

We reach for one like this where a pendant would hang too low: hallways, landings, a box room, a bedroom under a low ceiling. It suits a modest room as its main light. It takes a single E27 lamp, and we would choose a GLS globe in LED, up to 20W, which sits well inside a shade this size. Pair a dimmable lamp with a compatible dimmer and the level can come down for the evening. Keep it to dry rooms; bathrooms and covered porches want something sealed against moisture.

The frame is metal under a polished chrome finish and the shade is a laminated faux silk, black outside and white within. Dust the fabric with a soft brush now and then, wipe the chrome with a dry cloth so it is left clear of smears, and switch the light off before you start. It carries a one year warranty.
