A wide drum shade in dual faux silk sits close to the ceiling, its outer face a raw cocoa and its lining a grecian bronze, so the light takes on a warm tone as it spreads. Beneath, a frosted acrylic diffuser with a polished chrome trim closes the underside and softens the lamps behind it. The frame and ceiling plate are polished chrome throughout. At 60cm across it reads as a broad, low disc rather than anything that drops, which is the whole point of a semi flush fitting.

We reach for a fitting like this where a dining table, a landing or a hallway needs a decent spread of light and a pendant would hang too low. It works well in rooms with ceilings on the shorter side, and in a bedroom or sitting room where a single central light has to do all the work. Five E27 lampholders sit behind the diffuser; we would fit LED GLS lamps in a warm white, and the fitting will dim if you pair suitable lamps with a compatible dimmer, neither of which comes with it.

Construction is plated metal for the frame and plate, moulded acrylic for the diffuser and faux silk over the shade, in cocoa and bronze tones that sit happily with brass or chrome elsewhere in a room. Keep the fabric fresh with a soft brush or the upholstery nozzle of a vacuum on low, and give the acrylic an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth, both with the power off and the lamps cold. It carries a one year warranty. The wider range gives you plainer universal frames in polished chrome, satin nickel, antique brass, satin black and white for your own choice of shade, along with linear pendants. Lamps are not included.

The shade measures 600mm in diameter with a body depth of 220mm, and the overall height including the ceiling plate is 420mm.

Which lamps does it take?

Five E27 lamps, up to 20W each. LED GLS A60 lamps are the sensible choice and give an even wash through the frosted diffuser. Lamps are not supplied.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, provided you fit dimmable lamps and use a dimmer matched to them. No dimmer is included.

How do I look after the faux silk shade?

Brush it lightly or use a vacuum upholstery nozzle on a low setting. Avoid sprays and solvents, and never let the fabric get wet.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated IP20 and belongs in dry rooms such as bedrooms, hallways, landings and dining rooms.

How heavy is it?

It weighs 2.7kg net, so it is a substantial fitting rather than a lightweight one.
