Description

A tall standard lamp with a wide drum shade in grey faux silk, carried on a slim satin nickel column and a weighted round base. Three candle lamps sit inside the shade rather than a single one, so the fabric lights evenly and the glow stays soft. A foot switch on the base handles it, so you are not reaching under the shade every time you want light.

At 45cm across, the shade is generous enough to read under, and we would put it at the end of a sofa or beside an armchair where a table lamp would sit too low to be useful. It stands 1.6m tall, which puts the shade above eye level when you are seated. It works well in a sitting room, a bedroom corner or a home office, and the grey keeps company with most schemes without pulling attention. The three lamps together give plenty of light for a room this size; fit dimmable candle lamps and pair them with a dimmer if you would rather have the level under your control.

The metalwork is finished in satin nickel, a low sheen that sits between chrome and brushed steel and shows fingerprints less than either. It is double insulated, and built for dry rooms indoors. Give the faux silk an occasional going over with a soft brush or the upholstery tool on the vacuum, and keep water away from the fabric; the nickel wants nothing more than a dry duster. It carries a one year warranty. It takes E14 candle lamps, which are not included, and we would choose warm white LED candles here to keep the shade glowing rather than glaring.
