Banyan 3 Light E14 Floor Lamp 45cm Grey Organza - Polished Nickel

Three candle lamps sit inside a single grey organza shade, so the light spreads softly rather than pointing anywhere in particular, the sheer weave taking the hard edge off it. The stem and base below are finished in polished nickel, bright without being brash, and the shade is 45cm across. A foot switch on the flex means you can turn it on and off with a toe, without reaching up under the shade.

It stands 1.6m tall, which puts the light above the shoulder of a seated adult, so we would put it beside an armchair or at the end of a sofa where a table lamp would be lost. In a bedroom it works in the corner as a gentler alternative to the ceiling light, and on a landing it gives a pool of light where there is nowhere to stand a lamp. Double insulated and meant for dry indoor rooms, it takes small candle lamps, and it will dim if you pair suitable lamps with a compatible dimmer, neither of which comes with it.

The shade is grey organza, sheer and light, and it wants nothing more than an occasional going over with a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting to lift dust out of the weave; switch off at the foot and let the lamps cool before you go near them. Fingermarks come off the polished nickel with a dry microfibre cloth, and no sprays are needed. It carries a one year warranty. We keep this one in mind for rooms where the furniture is already busy, since a sheer shade reads as light rather than as another object, and it sits happily with chrome or nickel fittings elsewhere in the room. Lamps are not included.

What lamps does it take?

Three E14 candle lamps, up to 20W each. LED candle lamps in the C35 shape are the sensible choice and are what we would fit.

How tall is it and how much floor space does it need?

It is 1600mm tall with a shade 450mm in diameter, so allow a little over half a metre of width for the shade to sit clear of surrounding furniture.

Can it be dimmed?

Yes, with dimmable lamps and a compatible dimmer. Neither the lamps nor a dimmer is supplied, and the lamp's own control is a foot switch.

How is it switched?

By a foot switch on the flex, so you can operate it without bending down or reaching under the shade.

How do I clean the organza shade?

Dust it with a soft brush or a vacuum on its lowest setting, working with the weave. Keep it dry and avoid cleaning fluids, which can mark the fabric.

Is it suitable for a bathroom?

No. It is rated for dry indoor rooms only, so keep it to living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.
