Description

Three candle lamps sit inside a wide, shallow drum of grey organza, carried on a slim champagne gold column that stands 1.6m tall. The shade is 45cm across, so the light spreads sideways rather than dropping in a tight pool, and the sheer weave lets a soft glow out through the sides of the shade as well as up and down. A foot switch on the flex does the work, which saves reaching under the shade each time.

We reach for one of these where a table lamp has nowhere to sit: behind a low armchair, at the end of a sofa run, or filling the shadowed corner of a bedroom. It gives more output than most single-lamp floor lamps, enough to carry a sitting room through an evening without the big light on. It will take a dimmer if you want to soften things for television, though that calls for dimmable lamps and a separate dimmer, neither of which comes supplied. The footprint stays tight beneath the shade, so it tucks in close to furniture.

The metalwork is finished in a warm champagne gold, soft rather than brassy, and it sits easily alongside brass or bronze fittings already in the room. Double insulated, it is meant for dry rooms indoors and nothing more exposed. Dust the organza with a soft brush now and again so nothing settles into the weave, and give the metal an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth, dried off at once, with the power off and the lamps cool. Clear candle lamps put a little sparkle through the sheer shade, while opal ones keep the glow even. It carries a one year warranty, and lamps are not included.
