Description

Slim and low-slung, this is the shorter Abacus: a 35cm bar with a shallow hood that throws its light forward and down rather than out into the room. Two G9 capsules sit behind the hood, and a small toggle switch on the body means it can be worked by hand without a wall switch nearby. It dims as well, given a compatible dimmer, though a dimmer is not part of the package.

Picture lights earn their keep over framed prints, oils and watercolours, where the warm white output flatters paper and canvas without the cold cast that pulls colours about. We would also put it above a mirror in a cloakroom, along a narrow hall where a pendant would be in the way, or over a run of shelves in a study. The shorter length suits smaller frames and tighter walls, while the longer Abacus covers wider canvases. Rated for dry indoor rooms, it belongs in living spaces, landings and bedrooms rather than a bathroom or a porch.

The finish is antique brass, a softened warm gold with some depth to it rather than a bright polish, and it sits happily with older woodwork, gilt frames and darker paint. Keep it looking right with an occasional wipe from a dry duster or a barely damp cloth, taking the power off first and giving the capsules a moment to cool; leave polishes and sprays out of it, as they will dull the finish over time. It carries a one year warranty. We stock the same fitting in satin nickel and satin black, and in a longer size for bigger pictures, so a pair can be matched across a room or up a stairwell. The projection is 220mm, which brings the hood clear of most frame mouldings so the light falls across the artwork rather than behind it.

What lamps does it take, and are they included?

It takes two G9 capsules and they are supplied with the fitting, rated at 33W maximum each if you replace them later. LED capsules are the sensible choice.

Will it work on my existing dimmer?
