Description

The Knightsbridge 12DC50D is a 50W constant voltage LED driver that converts 230V mains to 12V DC output for low-voltage LED strip lighting and similar installations. The driver outputs a maximum of 50W continuous and is designed for trailing-edge dimmer compatibility, allowing brightness control when paired with a compatible dimmer switch on the mains input side.

Designed for installation inside ceiling voids, cabinet housings, and other enclosed dry locations where the driver will remain out of sight, the 12DC50D measures 184mm long by 61mm wide by 32mm high and weighs approximately 250g. The white ABS casing houses the transformer, circuit protection, and terminal connections at each end. The driver includes open circuit, short circuit, overload and over-temperature protection to shut down output if a fault occurs.

The Class II double-insulated construction means no earth connection is required, simplifying installation in plastic back boxes and non-earthed ceiling cavities. The SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) 12V output reduces shock risk on the load side. The IP20 rating limits use to dry internal environments only — the driver is not suitable for bathrooms, outdoor canopies, or any location where moisture ingress is possible. Trailing-edge dimmer compatibility should be verified before installation, as not all dimmers handle the inductive load of an LED driver equally.

Frequently Asked

What's the difference between constant voltage and constant current drivers?

Constant voltage drivers like the 12DC50D output a fixed 12V regardless of load, making them suitable for LED strip that includes its own current regulation. Constant current drivers output a fixed current (measured in mA) and are used for individual LED modules or arrays without built-in regulation.

Can this be dimmed with any dimmer switch?

The 12DC50D is compatible with trailing-edge dimmers only. Leading-edge dimmers may cause flickering, buzzing or failure to dim smoothly. Knightsbridge recommends testing dimmer compatibility before completing an installation, as some trailing-edge dimmers handle LED driver loads better than others.

Where can this driver be installed?

The IP20 rating limits installation to dry internal locations only: ceiling voids, inside kitchen plinths, cabinet housings, false ceilings. It cannot be used in bathrooms, outdoor canopies, or any environment where moisture or condensation may reach the driver casing.

What protections does the driver include?

The 12DC50D includes open circuit, short circuit, overload and over-temperature protection. If any of these faults occur, the driver shuts down output until the fault is cleared and power is cycled.
