Description
The Knightsbridge EMLED4L is a 3W LED emergency bulkhead providing 125 lumens of 5500K daylight white light, designed for exit route and escape path illumination in both commercial and residential buildings. The fitting can be configured for maintained operation (permanently lit during normal mains supply), non-maintained operation (lit only during mains failure), or switched maintained mode, making it adaptable to different regulatory and site requirements.
Built with a polycarbonate body and diffuser rated to IP65, the bulkhead is sealed against water ingress and dust penetration, allowing installation in outdoor locations, wet areas, stairwells and corridors exposed to the elements. The LiFePO4 battery provides a minimum 3-hour emergency duration on mains failure, meeting UK building regulations for most commercial escape route applications. The hinged gear tray and push-fit connector block reduce installation time compared to screw-terminal alternatives.
The 350mm × 117mm × 60mm dimensions suit wall and ceiling mounting above doorways, along corridors and on stairwell landings. The prismatic diffuser distributes light evenly across the escape path without creating harsh pools or shadows. A self-adhesive legend kit is included in the box, providing directional arrow symbols and running-person pictograms compliant with BS 5266 emergency lighting signage standards, allowing the bulkhead to function as both light source and wayfinding marker.

Frequently Asked
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained operation?
In maintained mode, the bulkhead stays lit whenever the mains supply is on, switching to battery power during a mains failure. In non-maintained mode, the bulkhead remains off during normal mains operation and only illuminates when the mains fails, conserving battery life and reducing running costs in locations that already have adequate ambient lighting.
Can this be used outdoors?
Yes. The IP65 rating protects against water jets and dust ingress, making the bulkhead suitable for external walls, covered outdoor walkways, building entrances and other weather-exposed locations. The polycarbonate construction resists impact and UV degradation better than standard ABS housings.
How is the emergency mode configured?
The fitting is configured via internal wiring during installation. The hinged gear tray gives access to the terminal block and mode selection connections. Wiring instructions are included in the manual and on the gear tray label, allowing an electrician to set maintained, non-maintained or switched maintained mode as required.
What does the legend kit include?
The self-adhesive legend kit includes directional arrow symbols and running-person pictograms in green and white, compliant with BS 5266 emergency signage standards. The legends are applied to the diffuser surface to indicate the direction of the nearest fire exit.
