Description
The Knightsbridge EMPOWER4ST is a 3.5W LED self-test emergency downlight with an integrated LiFePO4 lithium battery providing a minimum 3-hour emergency runtime. The fitting operates in maintained mode (on continuously, switching to battery during mains failure) or non-maintained mode (lit only during mains failure), selectable during installation. The self-test function runs automatic periodic tests at pre-programmed intervals to verify battery condition and lamp function, eliminating manual testing schedules.
Designed for corridors, stairwells, escape routes and office spaces where building regulations require emergency lighting, the downlight sits in a 45mm ceiling cut-out with a 32mm recessed depth and requires an 80mm minimum void above the ceiling. The unit ships pre-wired with the battery pack and a separate green LED charge indicator, so installation involves wiring to the mains supply and setting the maintained/non-maintained mode via the switch on the driver. A corridor lens accessory is included in the box for installations where concentrated light throw is needed along narrow passages.
The white polycarbonate bezel houses a 140-lumen LED module at 5500K daylight colour temperature, delivering 40 lumens per watt on a 140-degree beam angle. The IP20 rating suits dry indoor locations. The Class II double-insulated construction means no earth connection is needed during installation. The LiFePO4 battery chemistry provides longer service life and more charge cycles than traditional NiCd or NiMH emergency batteries, with the LED module rated at 30,000 hours L70B50 (70% lumen maintenance at 50% failure rate).

Frequently Asked
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained mode?
In maintained mode, the downlight operates continuously on mains power and switches to battery during a mains failure. In non-maintained mode, the LED remains off during normal operation and illuminates only when mains power is lost. The mode is selected via a switch on the driver during installation.
How does the self-test function work?
The integrated self-test module automatically runs periodic checks of the battery charge level and lamp function at pre-programmed intervals. Test results are indicated by the separate green LED charge indicator. This replaces manual monthly and annual testing schedules required by older emergency lighting systems.
What ceiling void depth is required?
A minimum 80mm void above the ceiling is needed to accommodate the driver unit and battery pack. The downlight bezel itself recesses 32mm into the ceiling through a 45mm diameter cut-out.
Can this be used in bathrooms?
The IP20 rating limits this downlight to dry indoor locations. Bathrooms require IP44 or higher ratings depending on zone placement. For bathroom emergency lighting, choose an IP-rated alternative from the Knightsbridge range.
