Description
The Knightsbridge EMPOWER4W is a 3.5W LED emergency downlight with an integrated lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery providing a minimum 3-hour runtime when mains power fails. The fitting operates in either maintained mode (lit continuously under normal conditions and switching to battery during power loss) or non-maintained mode (only illuminating when mains power is lost), selected during installation. The integrated LED outputs 130 lumens at 3000K warm white in both normal and emergency modes.
Designed for stairwells, corridors, communal areas and commercial spaces requiring BS 5266 compliance, the fitting recesses into ceilings with an 80mm minimum void depth. The 45mm cut-out diameter suits standard ceiling apertures, and the shallow 32mm recessed depth allows installation in plasterboard ceilings without additional framing. A separate green LED charge indicator mounted on the driver unit confirms battery status without opening the ceiling void. The pre-wired battery pack connects via a single plug-in connector, reducing on-site installation time.
The polycarbonate construction carries an IP20 rating for internal dry locations and a Class II double-insulated design requiring no earth connection. A corridor lens accessory ships in the box, narrowing the 140° beam angle to direct light along narrow hallways and reducing glare at eye level. The manual emergency test button on the driver allows monthly function checks without isolating mains supply. The LiFePO4 battery chemistry provides a longer service life than traditional NiCd or NiMH cells, with the LED module rated to L70B50 at 30,000 hours and the complete unit backed by a 5-year warranty.

Frequently Asked
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained modes?
In maintained mode, the LED is lit continuously under normal mains supply and switches to battery during power loss. In non-maintained mode, the LED only illuminates when mains power fails. The mode is selected during installation by wiring configuration. Maintained mode is required in areas where occupants need continuous lighting; non-maintained is acceptable where occupants are familiar with exit routes.
How long does the battery last before replacement?
The LiFePO4 battery provides significantly longer service life than traditional NiCd or NiMH emergency lighting batteries, typically 4-5 years under normal charge-discharge cycling. The green LED charge indicator on the driver unit signals when the battery requires replacement.
What ceiling void depth is required?
A minimum 80mm void depth is required to accommodate the driver unit and battery pack. The fitting itself recesses only 32mm into the ceiling, but the additional components sit above the ceiling plane.
Can the corridor lens be retrofitted after installation?
Yes. The corridor lens clips onto the front of the downlight bezel without requiring the fitting to be removed from the ceiling. It narrows the beam to direct light along corridors and reduce glare at eye level.
