Description

The Knightsbridge 20AX intermediate grid toggle switch is a single-module component designed for multi-way lighting circuits controlled from three or more locations. The module clips into Knightsbridge mounting frames (sold separately) from the front, allowing installation without removing the frame from the wall. The polished chrome finish on the toggle lever matches other polished chrome grid modules in the range.

Intermediate switches sit between two-way switches in a lighting circuit, allowing lights to be controlled from three, four or more positions — common in long hallways, staircases with landings at multiple levels, and large open-plan rooms with entry points at both ends. The 20AX rating handles lighting loads up to 4,600W on 230V mains, which covers most domestic and commercial lighting circuits including LED, halogen and incandescent installations.

The module body is constructed from premium-grade steel and ABS, providing mechanical strength at the switch mechanism and durability under repeated use. At 24.8mm wide, the module occupies a single grid position in Knightsbridge's modular grid system, which allows custom configurations of switches, sockets and other modules behind a single screwless faceplate. The 35mm minimum mounting box depth requirement is compatible with standard UK back boxes.

Frequently Asked

What is an intermediate switch used for?

An intermediate switch allows lighting control from three or more locations. It sits between two two-way switches in a circuit. For example, a staircase with switches at the ground floor, first-floor landing and second-floor landing would use two two-way switches (ground and second floor) with one intermediate (first floor) between them.

What mounting frame does this require?

The module clips into Knightsbridge grid mounting frames, which are sold separately. Mounting frames are available in 1-module, 2-module, 3-module and 4-module widths, allowing custom configurations. The frame fixes to a standard back box, then modules clip in from the front.

Can this be used with dimmer circuits?

No. Intermediate switches are on/off only and are not compatible with dimmer circuits. For dimmable multi-way lighting, a different wiring arrangement using master and slave dimmer modules is required.

What other finishes are available?

Knightsbridge produces grid toggle modules in a range of finishes including polished chrome, brushed chrome, polished brass, antique brass, matt black and white. Use the search function or filters to find other variants in stock at Niori.
