Description

The Knightsbridge 13A RCD fused spur combines a Type A residual current device with a switched fused connection unit behind an anthracite curved edge faceplate. The 30mA RCD monitors for earth leakage and trips within 40ms when it detects an imbalance, isolating the circuit to prevent electric shock. Type A protection covers both AC residual currents and pulsating DC currents up to 6mA, making it suitable for circuits feeding IT equipment, variable-speed motors, and appliances with electronic controls.

Part M compliance means the unit meets Building Regulation requirements for accessible dwellings and communal areas. The anthracite faceplate carries a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 8.9, providing sufficient visual contrast against typical wall finishes (most white walls measure LRV 75-85) to help visually impaired users locate the switch. The passive latching RCD resets automatically after a power cut, so circuits feeding essential appliances like fridges and freezers are not left isolated without manual intervention.

The unit requires a 35mm minimum back box depth and uses captive screw terminals that remain attached to the back plate during installation, reducing the risk of lost fixings. The thermoset resin construction is third-party tested to ISO 22196:2011 for anti-microbial properties, inhibiting bacterial growth on the surface in kitchens, bathrooms and clinical environments. The fused spur section accepts a standard 13A BS 1362 cartridge fuse (not included), allowing the load to be appropriately protected downstream of the RCD.

Frequently Asked

What does Type A RCD protection cover?

Type A RCDs detect both standard AC earth leakage and pulsating DC residual currents up to 6mA. This makes them suitable for circuits feeding modern appliances with electronic controls, variable-speed drives, IT equipment, and LED lighting — all of which can introduce DC components that a standard AC-only RCD may not detect reliably.

Does the RCD need resetting after a power cut?

No. The passive latching design resets automatically when mains power is restored, so circuits feeding fridges, freezers and other essential appliances remain operational without manual intervention after an outage.

What fuse does the spur section take?

The fused spur accepts a standard 13A BS 1362 cartridge fuse (the same type used in UK plugs). The fuse is not included and must be selected based on the downstream load — typically 3A for lighting circuits, 5A for low-power appliances, or 13A for higher loads up to the maximum rating.

Is it suitable for bathroom installation?

The unit carries an IP20 rating, which is appropriate for indoor dry areas and zones outside the bathroom's direct spray/splash areas. It cannot be installed within zones 0, 1 or 2 of a bathroom as defined by BS 7671 wiring regulations. Consult a qualified electrician to confirm placement.
