Description
The Knightsbridge 13A 1-gang unswitched socket uses a white thermoset resin faceplate with a 7mm profile and rounded edges rather than the sharp corners of standard switched sockets. The plate carries anti-microbial properties tested to ISO 22196:2011, designed to reduce bacterial growth on the surface in kitchens, bathrooms, care homes and medical facilities where hygiene requirements are higher than typical domestic installations.
The unswitched design means the socket is permanently live when wired to the mains supply, suited to appliances like fridges, freezers, heating controls and medical equipment that should not be accidentally switched off. The 13A rating handles standard UK appliance loads up to 3,000W, and the socket is certified to BS 1363-2 for residential and light commercial use. The 86mm square faceplate fits a standard UK single-gang 25mm minimum back box depth, compatible with most installation scenarios during new builds, renovations or like-for-like replacement.
Screw cap covers are included to hide the fixing screws once the plate is fitted, giving a cleaner finish than exposed screws. The white thermoset resin is more resistant to discolouration under UV exposure than standard polycarbonate plates, maintaining its appearance longer in high-daylight rooms or south-facing walls. The rounded edges reduce sharp corners that collect dust and grime, making the socket easier to wipe clean with a damp cloth.

Frequently Asked
What does unswitched mean?
An unswitched socket is permanently live when wired to the mains supply. It has no rocker switch to turn it on or off, so appliances plugged in are always receiving power. This design suits fridges, freezers, heating controls and medical equipment that should not be accidentally switched off.
What are the anti-microbial properties?
The white thermoset resin faceplate contains anti-microbial agents tested to ISO 22196:2011, which reduce bacterial growth on the surface. This is useful in kitchens, bathrooms, care homes and medical facilities where surface hygiene requirements are higher than typical domestic installations.
What back box depth is required?
A 25mm minimum back box depth is needed for safe installation. The 7mm faceplate projection adds to this, giving a total projection from the wall of approximately 7mm once the screw cap covers are fitted.
Can I use this socket in a bathroom?
The IP20 rating means this socket is not splash-proof or waterproof. UK wiring regulations restrict mains sockets in bathrooms to specific zones and distances from water sources. Consult a qualified electrician before installing any mains socket in a bathroom.
