Description

The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate switch adds a third switching point to lighting circuits that already have two-way switching at either end. Built for stairwells, long hallways and landings where lights need control from three or more locations, the intermediate function connects inline between two existing two-way switches to provide a mid-point toggle without requiring additional core cable runs.

The flat plate design sits 2.5mm proud of the wall once installed, making it one of the lowest-profile switches in the Knightsbridge range. The polished chrome faceplate is solid steel with a mirror-finish chrome plating, and the rocker is also metal rather than plastic, giving the switch a consistent finish across the entire visible surface. Two screw fixings attach the plate to a 16mm minimum back box.

The 10AX rating handles lighting loads up to 2,300W on 230V circuits, which is sufficient for most domestic and commercial lighting installations including LED, halogen and traditional incandescent fixtures. The switch carries IP20 ingress protection and includes a built-in gasket behind the faceplate to reduce dust and moisture ingress at the wall junction. Certified to EN 60669-1 and backed by a 25-year warranty.

Frequently Asked

What is an intermediate switch used for?

An intermediate switch is used in three-way or four-way lighting circuits, where a light needs to be controlled from three or more locations. It sits between two two-way switches and allows the circuit to be toggled from a mid-point without running additional core cables. Common applications include stairwells with switches at ground, mid-landing and upper floor, or long hallways with switches at both ends and in the middle.

What back box depth is required?

A 16mm minimum back box depth is needed. The flat plate design adds only 2.5mm projection from the wall once fitted, making this one of the slimmest profiles available in metal switches.

Is the rocker metal or plastic?

The rocker is metal with the same polished chrome finish as the faceplate, giving a consistent metallic appearance across the entire switch rather than the plastic rockers found on some budget ranges.

Can this be used with LED bulbs?

Yes. The 10AX rating is suitable for LED, halogen and incandescent lighting loads up to 2,300W on 230V circuits. Most domestic LED installations draw far less than this, so compatibility is not an issue.
