Description
The Knightsbridge 10AX 1-gang intermediate switch provides the third control point in a 3-way lighting circuit, designed for staircases, long hallways and landing installations where lights need switching from three separate locations. The screwless matt black faceplate sits flush against the wall with a 4.3mm projection, concealing all fixings behind a clip-on cover plate that removes without tools for redecorating.
An intermediate switch sits between two 2-way switches in the circuit, converting the on/off state from either direction. This allows a single light fitting or bank of lights to be controlled from three points — typically at the bottom of a staircase, the top landing, and a mid-floor position. The 10AX rating handles loads up to 2,300W at 230V, suitable for LED downlight banks, pendant circuits and wall light arrays.
The matt black finish is a powder-coated steel faceplate with a low-sheen surface that resists fingerprints and pairs cleanly with industrial, contemporary and monochrome interiors. The matching rocker switch sits within a defined aperture in the plate, maintaining visual consistency across multi-gang installations. The switch requires a minimum 16mm back box depth and includes an earth terminal for Class I wiring. A built-in gasket provides IP20 moisture resistance for dry interior locations.

Frequently Asked
What's the difference between an intermediate switch and a 2-way switch?
An intermediate switch sits between two 2-way switches in a 3-way lighting circuit. It has four terminals instead of the three found on a 2-way switch, allowing it to pass the switching signal from either direction. You cannot use an intermediate switch as the first or last switch in the circuit — those positions require 2-way switches.
What back box depth is needed?
A minimum 16mm back box depth is required for safe installation. The screwless cover plate adds 4.3mm of projection from the wall once fitted.
Is the screwless plate removable for decorating?
Yes. The matt black cover plate clips onto a separate metal sub-frame fixed to the back box. The cover can be removed without tools for painting around the switch and re-clipped afterwards without re-wiring.
What other finishes are available in this range?
Knightsbridge produces this screwless intermediate switch in polished chrome, brushed chrome, polished brass, antique brass, stainless steel and white finishes. Use the search function or filters to find other variants in stock at Niori.
