Description

A set of two ceramic planters, etched by hand with a band of chevrons above and below a run of fine horizontal lines and finished with close vertical ribbing at the collar. The shape is a rounded pot, widest through the belly and drawing in again to a plain flat rim and a narrow foot. The surface is chalky and matt in a dark, weathered grey brown, and the etching is cut deep enough to hold a shadow across every band.

Both pots are drilled for drainage and the ceramic is frost proof, so they can stay outside through the winter. On a patio they take a fern or a small tree, and the etched bands run right round the pot, so the pattern still reads once planting spills over the rim. Indoors the drainage holes mean each one needs a tray under it. The tone is a quiet base for planting rather than a colour that competes with it, which is what the grey is doing on a terrace of stone and gravel.

The clay is built by coiling: rolls of clay are laid one on another and smoothed into shape, then the pattern is cut in by hand. That makes the surface uneven across a single pot and different from one pot to the next. The Zadie range also holds the same pair in a neutral tone and a large planter in grey and in terracotta.
