Description
Our Yule platter is an oval of cream stoneware, 38.5cm long, 23cm wide and 2cm tall, made for carrying Christmas food to the table. A garland of pine sprigs runs just inside the rim, caught at intervals with little hearts, and from it hang the old favourites of a traditional tree: a drum, a pig tied with a bow, a horn, a candy cane, a pretzel and a woven heart. A fine line traces the very edge, and the open centre stays plain, so whatever you lay on it is framed rather than hidden.
At this size it is a serving piece rather than a plate for one. Set it in the middle of the table with mince pies, sugared pastries, gingerbread or a sliced stollen, or lay out cheese and crackers for guests on Christmas Eve. With a height of 2cm it is shallow and flat, so it suits food that sits on it rather than anything swimming in sauce. It earns its place on the kitchen counter during an afternoon of baking too, and between meals it can stand on a dresser or sideboard as Christmas decoration in its own right.
The decoration is a printed transfer finished with details painted by hand. Stoneware is dense and sturdy, and at 1.04KG this platter feels solid in the hand. It goes in the dishwasher, so clearing up after a busy Christmas lunch is simple, and it can go in the microwave and the oven, which means you can warm sausage rolls or pigs in blankets on it and bring them to the table on the same dish. For the table itself, lay it on a runner of linen or jute and tuck a few sprigs of real pine around it, so the garland on the rim seems to carry on across the cloth.
