Description

A small rectangular wall mirror set in a cast frame that measures 60cm across by 43cm, the whole assembly 3cm deep. The frame has a rounded outer lip that steps down to a flat face and then in again to the glass, and the casting carries the dents, waves and soft ridges of the mould it came out of. The finish is aged antique brass, pooled darker where the surface dips and worn to a lighter gold along the ridges.

This is the size for a cloakroom, a narrow hallway, or the wall above a chest of drawers where a larger mirror would crowd the space. Hung portrait it stands 60cm high on a 43cm width. Keyholes are cast into the top rail and into one side, so the same mirror can be turned and hung the other way round with no extra fitting. It weighs 4.38kg, so the fixing has to be a secure one.

The frame is cast in aluminium using sand moulds. Molten metal is poured, left to cool, then freed by breaking the sand away, which is why the profile is never quite straight and why one frame differs from the next. A larger Yamuna is made at 100cm wide by 75cm high.
