Description
This black stoneware vase takes the shape of a jug, with a small lip at the rim and a looped handle on one side. It stands 22.5cm tall and 13cm across, a useful middle height for a shelf, a mantelpiece or a deep windowsill. What sets it apart is the glaze. A glossy black covers the lower body, while from the rim a lighter glaze runs down in uneven drips and streaks, so the top of the vase looks as though it was dipped and left to run.
The handle is more than decoration. At 0.4KG the vase is light enough to lift by it, so it can move from the kitchen dresser to the living room as the seasons change. Fill it with dried grasses, seed heads or a few bare branches; its height suits stems of a modest length. Left empty, it holds its own on a sideboard, a hallway console or a bedroom chest of drawers, where the running glaze brings interest to a plain surface. It suits anyone who likes pottery with character and a darker palette, and it makes a thoughtful gift for a new home.
It is made of 100% stoneware. Stoneware is a dense clay fired at high temperature, which makes it a hard-wearing choice for a piece that travels from room to room. The glaze is glossy over the whole outside, the handle included, and its runs and drips are part of the finish rather than flaws. For the strongest look, set it against a pale wall or fill it with light, feathery stems, where the black body and the running glaze show at their best. The styling props shown are not included.
