Description

A pair of mugs in earthenware, each 11.5cm tall and 8.5cm across, holding 300ml. The glaze is a two tone reactive one. A narrow band of grey sits at the rim, runs over into the inside of the cup and bleeds down the outside in short drips, and below it the body breaks into bands of oatmeal and warm ochre that follow the throwing lines round the mug. The handle is a full round loop rather than a flattened one, and the grey catches along its outer edge.

Three hundred millilitres is a full mug of tea or a long coffee rather than an espresso cup. The sides flare out a little towards the rim, and at 11.5cm tall against 8.5cm across they stand taller than they are wide, which keeps the footprint small on a loaded tray or a bedside table.

Each mug is thrown and finished by hand and then glazed. Because the glaze is reactive it moves in the kiln and settles differently every firing, so the depth of the grey at the rim, the places the drips fall and how far the ochre runs differ between the two in a pair and again from one pair to the next. The Vizo mug is also made larger, holding 490ml.
