Description

The Vivan is a rectangular wall mirror in a mango wood frame, 120cm by 80cm overall, with softly rounded corners. The whole face of the frame is cut with fine parallel grooves that run across its width rather than along it, and at each corner they fan round the curve. The wood is pale and left natural, and the frame stands 4cm deep.

At 120 by 80cm it hangs either way up. Portrait it runs tall enough for a hallway or the wall beside a wardrobe; landscape it sits above a console or a chest of drawers. It is 4cm deep, so it sits close to the wall rather than standing proud of it, and at 16kg it wants a fixing into something solid.

The frame is mango wood and the glass is a plain mirror. Each frame is carved by hand with traditional tools, so the spacing and the depth of the grooves vary slightly from mirror to mirror. Mango is a by-product of fruit growing in India, cut for timber once the trees have stopped bearing. The same grooved carving runs across the Vivan range, which holds beds, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, side and coffee tables, a pantry cupboard and a second mirror.
