Description

The Vivan is a pantry cupboard in mango wood, 200cm tall, 75cm wide and 55cm deep, closed by a single full-height door. The door front is divided into three panels by horizontal rails, and each panel is carved into close vertical grooves cut one at a time, so the front reads as ridges rather than as flat boards. Iron caps sit over the top corners and the cupboard stands on a plinth.

Inside there are shelves, compartments, cubby holes and removable crates, with racks fixed to the back of the door as well. At 75cm wide and 55cm deep it holds the storage of a much larger cupboard in the footprint of a narrow one, because the run goes up the full 200cm rather than along the wall. The door is a single leaf across the whole width, so it opens the cupboard in one movement.

The cupboard is mango wood throughout. The grooves on the door are hand-carved, and the piece is finished and assembled by hand, so the depth of the grooves and the run of the grain differ from cupboard to cupboard. Vivan runs widely: a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, beds, coffee and side tables, bedside tables and mirrors all carry the same grooved detailing.

How do I look after it?

The wood is treated with a sealant, but it still wants daily care. Wipe the surfaces with a soft dry cloth to lift dust and moisture, and use mild soap and water sparingly, always working in the direction of the grain. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive materials away, use coasters and mats, mop up spills straight away, and keep it out of strong direct sunlight and away from extremes of heat and humidity.
