Vivan Grooved Mango Wood Side Table - Natural

This Vivan table is turned from solid mango wood in two parts: a round top 55cm across, and beneath it a pedestal shaped like a squat jar, narrow at the neck, full through the belly and drawn back in where it meets the floor. Fine vertical grooves are cut over the whole pedestal and round the rim of the top, while the upper face is left uncut. The mango is left open grained, and shallow checks run down the pedestal where the block has dried.

It stands 45cm high and 55cm across. The weight comes down through the middle rather than at four corners, so nothing catches a foot and the table can be drawn in from whichever side a chair happens to be on. At 11.4kg it is heavy for its size, which is what a solid block of this size weighs, and it stays where it is put. Beside a chair it takes a lamp, a glass and a book at once.

The wood is mango and every table is carved by hand, so the grooving falls at its own depth and spacing on each one and the grain runs a different way through every top. Nothing is stained into the surface, so the tone is the timber itself and it will shift as the table ages. The Vivan coffee table is this same shape at 75cm across, and both are made in charcoal as well as in natural.

How do I look after it?

Wash the wood in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it straight away. To feed and protect it, rub an edible oil such as olive or walnut into the surface with a dry cloth. The colour will change over time whatever is done.
