Villum Wooden Side Table - Brown

Our Villum side table is made from 100% reclaimed wood, and it is the shape that makes it worth a second look. The rectangular top is solid planking for most of its length, then opens into a bare wooden frame at one end. Underneath, a broad board slopes down at an angle to carry one side, with a ledge fixed across its face that forms a slot for a magazine or a slim book. The table measures 60cm long, 40cm wide and 48cm tall, and the wood is a warm brown with knots, saw marks and fine cracks left visible in the surface.

At 48cm tall it sits comfortably beside an armchair or a bed, so it works as a reading table in the living room, a bedside table in a guest room or a landing place in the hallway for keys and post. The solid part of the top takes a table lamp, a candle holder or a short stack of books, and the maximum load is 30KG. The slot in the base keeps the magazine you are reading within reach without adding to the clutter on top, and the open frame stops the table looking heavy in a small room.

The finish is waxed, which gives the wood a soft, low sheen and lets the grain show through rather than sealing it under a hard coat. Care is simple: wipe it clean with a moist cloth. Reclaimed wood keeps the marks of its earlier life, so the knots and cracks are part of the table, not faults in it. The table weighs 7.7KG, light enough to move from the sofa to the bedroom when you need it. Set it with the open frame facing the room and a lamp on the solid end, and it reads as a small sculpture as much as a table.
