Description

A tall glazed lantern, 70cm high on a 13cm square footprint, built as a slim iron cage with glass in every face. Each side is divided into six panes by a single upright and two cross bars. A solid pitched roof caps it, with a stout arched handle standing up from the centre of it, and the body sits on a stepped iron plinth that is wider than the cage above it. One face is hung as a door on its left upright and held shut by a small pin catch at mid height.

At 70cm it stands on the floor rather than on a table: on a hearth, at the foot of a chimney breast, or in a pair either side of a doorway. The opening takes a pillar candle, set down onto the base plate inside, and the handle carries the lantern once it has cooled. It weighs 2.5kg and the plinth is the widest part of it, so it stands square on a hard floor without help. It is made for indoor use.

The cage, the roof and the plinth are iron under an antique brass finish, which is mottled rather than even and runs darker across the roof and the base than it does along the glazing bars. The panes are plain glass. The candle is not included, and the same lantern is made at 50cm on the same 13cm square base.
