Description

A round earthenware platter 38.5cm across and 5.5cm deep, carrying a textured spiral that runs unbroken from the centre out to the rim. The spiral stands proud as a raised ridge rather than being drawn onto the surface, so it takes the glaze differently at every turn. The glaze is a reactive one laid on in layers, settling pale grey across most of the face and breaking darker where it thins over the ridges.

At 38.5cm across this is an oversized platter, wide enough to take a whole cake, a tray of pastries or a charcuterie spread laid out flat rather than stacked. The 5.5cm depth gives it a shallow well instead of a flat face, so anything loose stays on the platter rather than travelling off the edge. At 1.9kg it is a substantial piece to carry to the table, and it sits still once it is down.

The clay is local Portuguese earthenware, poured by hand into moulds and finished by hand afterwards. The glaze is built up in layers and moves as it fires, so the tone changes from one platter to the next and no two leave the kiln alike. Valinha also runs to dinner plates, side plates, cereal bowls, a footed bowl, a serving bowl, two jugs and a twelve piece dinner set.
