Description

The Uzuri is a stoneware planter, 17cm tall and 20.5cm across, built as a wide straight-sided bowl that steps in to a shorter, narrower foot. The reactive glaze breaks up across the whole of it, a dark brown mottling over a pale green ground, pooling thick and almost black in places and thinning to cream where the surface stands proud. The rim is plain and the opening measures 20cm.

It is wider than it is high, so it holds a plant that spreads rather than one that climbs, and the 20cm opening takes an inner pot. That is how it is meant to be used: pot the plant separately and stand the pot inside the bowl. Stood at bench height, the glaze is read from the side.

The planter is stoneware and every one is glazed by hand. A reactive glaze goes on flat and then changes in the heat of the kiln, running and breaking as it fires, so the tone and the pattern come out differently on each piece and no two are the same. The Uzuri range also runs to a tall vase.
