Description

The Ullu is a terracotta planter, 27cm high and 33cm across, with a rolled rim above a body that swells out and then draws in to a narrow foot. A band of close horizontal ridges is turned into the lower half. The clay is left raw and unglazed, a pale pinkish buff, matt right across it.

The opening is 26cm and the planter stands 27cm high, which suits a shrub, a grass or a small tree rather than a windowsill herb. It has drainage holes and comes with a removable plug, so it drains outside and can be stood indoors with the plug in. It weighs 4kg empty. Storing it away or inside over the winter months will make it last longer.

The planters are made in Vietnam by coiling: rolls of clay laid one on another and then smoothed by hand into the final shape, a method handed down through generations of local makers. The Ullu planter is also made large and extra large, and the extra large takes a tree such as an olive.
