Description

A terracotta planter 41cm across and 36cm tall, with an opening 33cm wide. The rim flares outwards, the wall draws in below it to a band of horizontal ridges, and then it swells out again and tapers to a narrower foot. The terracotta is unglazed and left raw, so the surface is matt and slightly chalky and the colour shifts between pale sand and a deeper pink across a single pot.

At 41cm across, 33cm at the mouth and 36cm deep, this takes a shrub, a small tree or a full grown perennial rather than a seedling. There is a drainage hole in the base with a removable plug, so the same pot goes outside with the plug out and indoors with it in. It weighs 6kg empty, which is before compost and a plant, so it is worth siting before filling. Three sizes are made.

The pots are made in Vietnam by coiling: rolls of clay are laid up in layers and then smoothed by hand into the finished shape, which is why the thickness of the wall and the line of the ridges vary from pot to pot. Nothing is glazed, so what is seen is the clay itself. The Ullu planter is also made at 33cm across and at 59cm across.
