Description

The extra large Ullu planter stands 48cm high and 59cm across, with an opening 47cm wide. The body is round and full, ribbed with a run of raised horizontal bands around the lower half, and it draws in at the shoulder before flaring out again to a wide rolled rim. The terracotta is left raw and unglazed, so the surface is matt and a dusty pink brown, paler where the clay has been smoothed and deeper in the hollows between the ribs.

At 59cm across with a 47cm opening, this size takes a mature shrub or a small tree, an olive among them. It has drainage holes and comes with a removable plug, so it can stand outside as it is or go indoors with the plug in. All three sizes stand together on a stone terrace, the extra large a clear head taller than the other two.

The planter is ceramic, made in Vietnam by coiling: rolls of clay are laid up in rings and then smoothed by hand into the finished shape. Because the form is worked by hand the ribs are never quite even and the wall thickness varies, and the clay fires to a slightly different tone from one batch to the next. Three sizes are made.
