Description

The Tukana is a wall planter: three zinc pots hung in a row from a flat iron rail that fixes to a wall through a hole at each end. Each pot drops into a circular collar on the end of a short iron drop and is held there by its own rolled rim, and it lifts straight out again. The pots taper from a 10cm mouth down to a narrower base and carry a second rolled rim at the foot. The zinc has already weathered to a chalky pale grey, with rust breaking through around the rims and running down the sides, heavier on one pot than the next.

The rail measures 38cm from end to end and stands 12cm clear of the wall, which fits a narrow strip beside a door, the back of a porch, or a run of wall above a worktop. Each pot is 10cm across the mouth, so the three will hold a row of herbs, three small succulents, or one trailing plant with two smaller ones beside it. Because each pot lifts out of its collar, one can be planted up or swapped without taking the rail off the wall.

The rail and the pots are iron under a zinc coating, and the coating weathers rather than holding its finish: rust is showing on a new piece and it will rust more over time. It is made for an outdoor wall and works on an indoor one. It follows the Abari planters, which run to hanging, tapered and wall hung forms in aged zinc.
