Description

This small candle holder is made of stoneware in the shape of a bird, with a tall upright column rising from its tail end to take a single taper candle. The bird sits low at one side with its head lifted, finished with a painted wing, a tiny dot of an eye and a touch of colour at the tip of the beak. Around the top of the column runs a band of little circles over a row of painted half-moons, a simple pattern that suits the cream stoneware. At 9cm long, 6cm wide and 12.5cm tall it is a compact piece that needs little room on a shelf or a table.

We like it best close to eye level, where the little bird can be seen properly: on a bookshelf, on a sideboard beside a few framed prints, or on a tray on the coffee table among other small treasures. With a tall taper in place the bird looks smaller still, which is much of its charm, and the candle lends the piece height without taking up any more surface. It makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves birds or collects ceramics, and it sits happily on a dining table for a relaxed evening with friends.

It is made entirely of stoneware and partly decorated by hand, so its painted details may vary slightly in line and shade from one piece to the next. Those small differences are part of the appeal.
