Description

A mango wood board 35cm long, 18cm across and 2cm thick, with rounded ends. Two thirds of it is a shallow dished well inside a raised lip, and the floor of the well carries a scalloped pattern of gouge marks left by the tool. The last third is cut into concentric arc shaped ridges that follow the curve of the end, and that is where the hand goes to lift it.

At 35 by 18cm this is a board for one course rather than a whole table: bread and olive oil, a few cheeses, or a row of dips in small bowls stood in the well. Several of them on a laid table each carry a different part of the same meal. The lip around the well keeps anything loose from rolling off, and the ridged end gives a grip for carrying the board to the table.

The board is mango wood. Mango trees are grown first for their fruit and harvested over a number of years, and they are cut for timber only once they have stopped bearing, so selling the waste wood gives the farmers a further income. It is made in two sizes, this one at 35 by 18cm and the other at 60 by 20cm. Each board is cut and carved by hand, so the gouge pattern in the well and the run of the grain differ from board to board.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

35cm long, 18cm across and 2cm thick.

Is it safe for food?

Yes.

What is the ridged end for?

It is the hand hold. The concentric ridges carved into that end give a grip for carrying the board.

Is there a larger one?

Yes. It is made in two sizes, this one at 35 by 18cm and the other at 60 by 20cm.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it immediately. Rub an edible oil such as olive or walnut into the wood to feed and protect it, bearing in mind that oil will darken the tone. The colour will change over time.
