Description

The Timu is an A6 journal, 11 by 15cm and 1.5cm thick, bound in soft chocolate brown leather with a lightly pebbled grain. A leather strap crosses the spine and wraps right around the book to hold it shut, and either side of it the spine is hand stitched in bands of crossed thread that show on the outside. Inside is thick cream paper with a deckled, uneven edge, so the block never sits perfectly square.

At A6 it is pocket and handbag size rather than desk size, which is what suits it to travelling, sketching and notes made away from a table. The strap wraps right around the book and holds it shut, so it can go loose in a bag without the covers splaying or the pages catching. The covers are soft leather rather than board, so the whole journal is 1.5cm thick and flexes instead of sitting rigid.

The cover is leather, which is a by-product, and its colour changes with age and handling. The paper is made from recycled cotton rag by a method passed down through generations, each sheet formed by hand and dried in the sun before the block is bound and stitched into the leather. No wood pulp is used, so the paper is tree free, and no two sheets are exactly alike. Timu is also made in A5.
