Description

The Thottam is a long swing arm: a rectangular brass plate on two screws, a rod rising from a hinge at the plate, then a wide sweeping curve out and over to a plain conical shade pointing straight down. There is nothing on it beyond the rod, the bend and the cone. A rust coloured lead drops from the plate with a switch on it. The finish is a warm antique brass, coppery where the light catches the curve. It is 48cm tall and the arm reaches 55.5cm from the wall.

An arm that long puts the light over something rather than against the wall it is fixed to: over the end of a bed, over a chair, over a table pushed against a wall. The hinge at the plate lets the whole arm swing sideways, so the cone can be moved without moving the fixing. It plugs straight into a mains socket, so no electrician is needed. It takes one E27 bulb up to 25W and it is rated IP20 for dry indoor rooms.

The arm and the shade are iron under an antique brass finish, and the lead is rust coloured. At 4.35kg it is the weight of the fixing as much as the fitting, so the wall needs to take it.
