Description

The Thoko is a candlestick cut from reclaimed wood: a turned dish, ringed on the outside with fine incised lines, standing on a short stem above a chunky square base that widens towards the floor. The dish is shallow and a pillar candle stands on it rather than dropping into a socket. The timber keeps its whole history on the surface, with deep grain, splits running in from the ends and the odd old nail hole.

At 14cm tall and 16cm across the base this is a table piece rather than a mantelpiece one, and it stands on a sideboard, taking a pillar candle in the dish. The base is wide and heavy enough to carry a large candle. Because each one is cut from salvaged timber, sizes vary by up to 10cm from the measurements given.

The wood is reclaimed, bought in local markets in India and then hand carved and restored. No two of these candlesticks are alike: tone, finish and size all differ from piece to piece. The Thoko is also made with a round base.
