Description

The Thoko is a candlestick worked from a single piece of reclaimed wood, 14cm tall and 16cm across, in a squat hourglass profile: a wide flared foot, a pinched waist and a broad round top. The top is hollowed into a shallow dish with a metal spike standing at its centre, and a pillar candle presses down onto it. The wood is split and checked along the grain from its earlier life and finished in a dark stain.

At 14cm tall and 16cm across this is a low, broad holder. It sits a pillar candle at about the height of the books and bowls around it on a coffee table, a console or a mantelpiece, rather than lifting it above them. The candle goes onto the spike instead of dropping into a socket, so its diameter is not fixed by the holder. Each piece is reclaimed and worked by hand, and the size varies by up to 10cm, so the one that arrives may be a little larger or smaller than the figures given.

The wood is reclaimed, bought from local markets in India, etched by hand with traditional tools and then restored, so every holder carries its own splits, tool marks and depth of stain and no two are alike. Thoko is made in a round design and a square one. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

What candle does it take?

A pillar candle. It presses onto the metal spike in the dish rather than dropping into a socket, so the diameter is open to you.

Will every holder look the same?

Not exactly. Each piece is reclaimed and worked by hand, so the tone, the finish and the splits differ, and the size can vary by up to 10cm.

Is it made in another shape?

Yes. Thoko is made in a round design and a square one.

Is a candle included?

No. The holder is sold on its own.

How do I look after it?

Wash it with a mild dish soap and warm water after each use so wax does not build up, and do not soak it. Keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away. An edible oil such as olive or walnut oil rubbed into the wood with a cloth will protect it, though it may darken the tone.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Stand the candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
