This cream stoneware side plate is 24cm across and 2cm tall, a size that takes a slice of birthday cake, a sandwich or a small helping of fruit without crowding. Little sweet-shop drawings are scattered across the plate: ice cream cones, ice lollies, swirled lollipops, wrapped sweets, candyfloss, gummy bears and gift boxes tied with bows. At the centre, a ring of small dots frames the words 'sWeeT DaY' in a playful mix of capitals and small letters, so the message sits where the food goes and comes back into view as the plate is cleared. The edge is gently uneven rather than perfectly circular, which gives it a relaxed, informal look.
