Description

A small iron candle holder, 9cm tall and 6cm across. The form is an open cup set on a narrow waist above a teardrop body, which tapers to a point where it meets a flat, beaten disc foot with a wavy, uneven edge. The cup is faceted where the hammer has worked it, and the whole piece is finished in black with a pitted surface that picks up a dull sheen along the high points.

At 9cm this is a low holder, so the candle carries the height and the holder itself stays below the line of sight across a table. It takes a taper. The cup is a socket rather than a flat dish, so a taper drops into it, and the disc foot is wider than the body and sits flat on a tray, a mantelpiece or a windowsill. A run of them down the centre of a table reads as a line of flames at one height.

The holder is iron throughout. Each one is hand forged: the metal is heated in a furnace and then hammered to shape, which is what leaves the facets on the cup and the ripple in the edge of the foot, and it means the outline and the surface differ from one holder to the next. The candle is not included.

Frequently Asked

What candle does it take?

A taper. The cup is a socket rather than a flat dish, so the candle drops into it.

How big is it?

9cm tall and 6cm across at the foot.

Is it sold singly?

Yes. This is one holder.

Is every one the same?

No. Each is forged and hammered by hand, so the facets on the cup, the line of the body and the edge of the foot vary from one to the next.

How do I look after it?

Wash it with a mild dish soap and warm water after each use so wax does not build up, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from it. Stand the candle securely, keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has cooled fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
