Description

The Sindar is a mango wood serving tray, 35.5cm across, with a small bowl in the same wood that drops into a turned recess at the centre of it. The surface is charred: a controlled flame is passed across the wood to darken it and bring the grain up, and the whole piece is then sanded back. Both parts are food safe.

At 35.5cm across, the tray takes a spread rather than a single dish. Charcuterie, cheese or bread go round the outside and the bowl at the centre holds the olives, the dip or the dressing that goes with them, within reach of everyone round the table. The charred tone is dark, so a pale cheese, a green herb or a white napkin reads sharply against it.

The wood is mango. The charring is done with a controlled flame held back from deep scorching, and the surface is sanded afterwards, so what is left is a smooth warm brown in which the darker grain and the paler bands of the wood both still read, rather than a rough burnt face. The bowl is made in the same wood and carries the same finish. The Sindar range also holds a pedestal bowl in the same brown.
