Description

The Sindar is a pedestal bowl in mango wood, 16cm tall and 31 by 32cm across the top, carried up on a turned foot rather than sitting flat on the table. The rim is thick and rounded, and it runs in a soft wave rather than a true circle. The surface has been worked over with a controlled flame so that it burns to a darker brown and the grain comes up more clearly, then sanded back so nothing is left rough. The burn is kept shallow, so the result is a warm brown rather than a black.

The foot is what the bowl is for: it lifts the contents clear of the table, so fruit in it reads as a centrepiece rather than as something set down. On a dining table it can stand in the middle through a meal, and at 16cm tall it does not block the view across. Between meals it moves to a sideboard or a kitchen island. It is food safe, so fruit and bread go straight in without a liner.

The bowl is mango wood. The charring is done piece by piece and follows the grain of the wood it is applied to, so the depth of colour is not the same on any two. The Sindar range also runs to a serving tray with a bowl in it.
