Description

A table clock, 28cm tall, in silver. At 25cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A clock on a surface is read from close to, which is the opposite of a wall clock: the numerals can be finer, the case matters more, and the thing is as much an object as an instrument.

A cool metal finish reflects white rather than yellow, which sharpens a room instead of warming it. Beside a window it disappears; against a dark wall it draws a bright outline. A floating face has no visible dial behind the hands: the numerals or markers are set into the glass, so the wall or the case shows through and the hands appear unsupported. Brass warms a room in a way chrome and steel do not, because it reflects light yellow rather than white. Unlacquered, it will darken slowly and unevenly with handling, which most people come to prefer. Glass borrows its colour from whatever sits behind it, so the same piece looks warmer against a painted wall than against a window. It shows dust sooner than an opaque finish, and cleans in seconds. Moulded plastic is light and unbothered by being knocked, which is what makes it sensible where something will be handled or moved often. It will chalk slightly after years of direct sun.

It runs on 1 Alkaline cell, not included. The dial is marked in Roman numerals.
