Description

A tall box lantern, 58cm high on a 20cm square base, built as a slim metal frame around four full-height glass panels. The top is a flat solid plate with a small raised collar at the centre and a thin wire loop handle standing up from it, and the base is a solid tray with a lipped edge. One panel opens on a small wire catch set into an upright. The metal is antique black and the surface is matt rather than bright.

At 58cm this is the middle of three Sia sizes, and all three stand together on the floor, each taking a pillar candle. The frame takes a church candle or a tealight. The glass runs the full height on all four sides, so the flame shows from any angle, and the base is 20cm square.

The frame is zinc and the panels are glass. The metal is soldered around the glass by hand with traditional tools, so weld marks show at the joins and no two frames come out quite the same. The Sia lantern runs to three sizes, at 33.5cm, 58cm and 76.5cm. The candle is not included.

Does it get hot in use?

Yes. Position the candle securely and make sure the flame is not directed at the glass. Keep it out of reach of children, wait until it has fully cooled before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
