Description

The Sia is a small table lantern, 18cm tall on a 7cm square base. Four clear glass panels are soldered into a slim iron frame finished in a mottled antique black, and one face is hung on two barrel hinges as a door, held shut by a short iron pin that stands out from the opposite upright. The top is a flat plate with a raised upstand, and a folded wire handle arches over it. Four small feet lift the base clear of the surface underneath.

It is sized for a single tealight, and at 7cm square it stands on a windowsill, a bathroom shelf or the corner of a laid table where a hurricane would be in the way. The glass runs almost the full height of each face, so the flame is visible from every side and the frame reads as four black lines rather than a box. The wire handle means it can be carried lit from one room to another, or hung from a hook for the evening and taken back down.

The frame is iron and the panels are clear glass. The metal is soldered round the glass with traditional tools, and the weld marks left at each join are visible on every lantern and sit in different places on each one. The Sia range runs to larger floor lanterns as well as this table size. The tealight is not included.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it over with a soft dry cloth, and use a microfibre cloth in a circular motion on the glass. Warm water and a mild dish soap will shift wax, but dry it straight away and do not soak it. Stand the candle securely, keep the flame away from the glass, and remember it gets hot in use. Keep it out of reach of children, let it cool fully before handling it, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
