Description

A wall hung wine rack made from a single flat iron bar 62cm long, flared at both ends and drilled for fixing at each flare and again at the centre. Four cradles are wrapped round the bar, each one a curved strap carrying a large ring on one side of it and a small ring on the other. The iron is hammered over its whole face and finished in antique brass, and because the surface is left uneven the brass sits light on the ridges and dark in the hollows.

The rack hangs vertically, and each bottle drops through the two rings of a cradle, body through the large ring and neck through the small one, so it is held at an angle with the label facing out. Four standard bottles fit, and the rings are wide enough to take a magnum. It stands 19cm out from the wall, which is enough to want a stretch of wall that nobody has to pass close to, and it holds four bottles clear of a worktop or a sideboard.

The rack is iron throughout. It is hand soldered rather than welded, then hammered by hand and treated with an antique brass finish. Iron is used for its strength and its durability. Because the hammering is done piece by piece, the pattern of marks and the way the brass settles into them differ from one rack to the next.
