Description
This is a Christmas tree you can fill. Our Shirly platter is made of 100% stoneware in the shape of a tiered fir, with a pointed top, stepped branches down each side and a straight edge at the base. Fine stripes are painted by hand around the rim, so every line has the slight wobble of a brush rather than the evenness of a print, and the pink body has a soft sheen on the inside. It measures 25cm long, 21cm wide and 5.5cm tall, a good size for a generous helping of biscuits that passes easily round the table.
With sides 5.5cm tall, it sits between a plate and a bowl: deep enough that sweets, nuts and wrapped chocolates stay put as it goes from hand to hand, and shallow enough that everything is easy to reach. Put it out with mince pies on the coffee table on Christmas Eve, fill it with gingerbread for a December afternoon tea, or leave it by the front door with clementines for visitors. It suits anyone who likes a festive table without going all out on decorations, and it makes a thoughtful present for a host, filled with homemade biscuits and wrapped.
The maker confirms it is suitable for food and can go in the dishwasher and the microwave, so warmed mince pies can come straight to the table in it and the platter can go in with the plates afterwards. It is not suitable for the oven, so bake in a tin and move things across once they are out of the oven. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic, and at 0.83KG this piece feels solid in the hand without being a struggle to pass. For styling, set it on a wooden board or a linen runner, where the pink and the painted stripes stand out, and between meals keep it on the sideboard filled with pine cones.
