Description
Shirly is a little stoneware tealight holder made in the shape of a house, with a pitched roof, a chimney and small square windows cut through its walls. Set a tealight inside and the light spills out through every window, so the house seems to glow from within on a dark December evening. The body is white, and hand-painted details pick out a shuttered attic window, an arched front door, sills beneath the windows and a slim tree on one side wall. It stands 16cm tall, 11.5cm long and 9cm wide, a size that sits comfortably on a windowsill or shelf without crowding it.
This is Christmas decoration, made for the weeks when the house fills with candlelight. Put it on a windowsill so anyone passing catches the glow, on the mantelpiece among greenery, or at the centre of a sideboard. It holds its own as a single piece, and it sits just as happily among other ceramic houses and figures you already bring out each December to build a small winter village. Because it is compact, it also suits a hall console or the corner of a desk where a larger candle holder would not fit. It makes a thoughtful present for someone who decorates early, or for a first Christmas in a new home.
The holder is made entirely of stoneware, a dense, hard-fired ceramic, and at 0.63KG it has enough weight to sit steadily where you put it. At the back, an arched opening lets you slip a tealight in and lift it out again. The finish is painted by hand, so small differences in the brushwork from one piece to the next are part of its charm rather than a flaw. For styling, line it up with a couple of slim taper candles at different heights, then let the windows do the work once the lights go down.

Frequently Asked
What is this tealight holder made of?
It is made entirely of stoneware, a dense, hard-fired ceramic, and the decoration on the house is painted by hand.
How big is the house?
It stands 16cm tall, 11.5cm long and 9cm wide, and it weighs 0.63KG, so it sits neatly on a windowsill, mantelpiece or shelf.
How do I put the tealight in?
There is an arched opening in the back wall of the house, so you can slip a tealight inside and lift it out again easily.
Does the light show through the windows?
Yes. The windows are cut through the stoneware walls, so a lit tealight inside shines out through each of them and the little house appears to glow.
Will mine look exactly the same as every other one?
Not exactly. The finish is painted by hand, so the brushwork varies slightly from piece to piece and no two houses are quite identical.
