Description

The Shawa is a barrel of open woven rattan on a metal frame. The weave changes as it goes: bands of loose square mesh at the top and foot, and through the middle a tighter panel worked in a hexagonal cane pattern, so the shade reads as three horizontal zones rather than one texture. The rattan is left natural and varies from pale straw to a warmer brown between canes. It stands 45cm tall and 37cm across at its widest.

Because the weave is open at every point, the bulb stays visible and the shade throws a dense pattern of small shadows onto the ceiling and the walls nearest it. The change between the loose bands and the tight middle panel means that pattern is not uniform: it is coarse at top and bottom and fine across the belly. Hung over a bed or a table where the walls are close, that is the whole effect; in the middle of a large room it is lost. It is made for ceiling use only. It weighs 1.2kg.

Each shade is woven by hand over its metal frame, so the density of the mesh and the exact line of the barrel differ from one to the next. No fitting, flex or bulb is included.

Will it hide the bulb?

No. The weave is open all the way round, so the bulb is visible and its shape is part of what you see. A softer or frosted bulb is easier on the eye than a clear filament behind an open weave.

No. It is made for ceiling use only.
